Einride Receives Driverless Permit from US NHTSA
Swedish startup Einride, which develops autonomous trucks, received a license from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to drive driverless on public roads.
Einride will begin its test drives on a limited stretch of road in the U.S. state of Tennesse, until it will expand over time. The first pilot will feature one driverless truck – the Einride Pod – that will actually be driving autonomously. Monitoring will be done by so-called remote pod operators, who will be able to monitor the vehicle remotely and provide assistance to the system if necessary.
The tests will be conducted in partnership with GE Appliances as a customer and will take place on public roads with mixed traffic. Einride co-founder and CEO Robert Falck commented:
“This is a type of vehicle that has never before been seen on U.S. roads and marks a major milestone as a turning point for the future of the freight industry,” said Robert Falck, CEO and Founder at Einride. “We know the autonomous and electric technology of our pod will not only revolutionize transportation but also create thousands of jobs and help America stay competitive.”
Begin testing in the third quarter of 2022 and perform deliveries from a GE Appliances manufacturing facility.
