From 2030 On California Requires All Autonomous Cars To Be Zero Emission Vehicles

California Governor Gavin Newsom today signed legislation that will only allow autonomous cars that are zero-emission vehicles starting in 2030. The SB 500 law is the state’s latest attempt to limit the sale of new internal combustion engine vehicles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Another 2020 law bans the sale of internal combustion vehicles starting in 2035, and for trucks starting in 2045.

California traditionally leads climate protection efforts. Back in the 1990s, its environmental protection standards and emissions standards were among the strictest in the world. Although California is home to just over one-tenth of the U.S. population, the state’s size often makes it a leader for many other U.S. states, de facto forcing manufacturers to meet California’s emissions limits.

The largest operators of zero-emission vehicle fleets among autonomous car manufacturers to date include GM Cruise and Waymo. GM Cruise exclusively uses the battery-electric Chevrolet Bolt (about 170 vehicles), while Waymo has been using the Jaguar iPace since the last generation with about 100 vehicles to date. In fact, electric cars offer some advantages over internal combustion vehicles. For example, the control of the vehicle is simpler in an electric car than in an internal combustion car due to less complex mechanics.
