The Art of Waymo Over the Years

As the only developer of self-driving cars, Waymo has also always used the robotaxis as a surface for art. Even years ago, when the cute Firefly vehicles were driving around Mountain View, a considerable portion of the 60-vehicle fleet were adorned with art on the side doors. Here’s my little compilation of encounters with such vehicles a few years ago.

Waymo skipped this tradition with sthe ubsequent minivans, but brought it back with the Jaguar iPace in San Francisco. Jessica Lee, a San Francisco artist, was invited by Waymo to create art for the sides of the vehicles. She chose motifs from the various neighborhoods San Francisco is known for.

I had a great time working on this piece for @Waymo, and I am excited to share it here. SF holds a very special place in my heart, and the illustration is a small personalized map of San Francisco that captures the city’s uniqueness, exciting neighborhoods, and communities. pic.twitter.com/LiyT9i1oa4

And now the day before yesterday I saw the first vehicle with such an art surface in front of me in the Mission District on 21st Street.
