The Resurrection of DeLorean – As Electric Vehicle

Actually, DeLorean, the car company that manufactured the iconic DeLorean DMC-12, still enshrined in popular culture, had already been disbanded in 1985, a few years after its founding. But yesterday’s Super Bowl LVI had a surprise: a 15-second trailer from DeLorean in which the familiar gullwing doors can be seen in the dark.

The future returns! The DeLorean Motor Company announced on Valentine’s Day that it will set up its new company headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, creating 450 jobs. The company was re-established in 1995, with a clear distinction from its predecessor, but with a mission to provide maintenance, repair and other services for the 9,000 vehicles originally produced. With the move from Humble to San Antonio, the company is now looking to prepare for bigger things: an electric DeLorean.

For now, only a few hoodies and T-shirts are available for purchase on the company’s website, but soon it will be possible to order electric DeLoreans there. Joost de Vries, CEO of DeLorean Motor Company, said in the press release:

We are grateful for the tremendous support we’ve received from the community. San Antonio boasts a growing component and vehicle manufacturing sector as well as a wide array of global advanced manufacturing operations,”

The original DeLorean Motor Company was founded by John DeLorean in Detroit in 1975 and eventually closed in 1985 after technical problems in production left the company $17 million in debt.

Since the legendary design studio Italdesign also sent a congratulatory tweet, it is suspected that the company will also be involved in the design of the new edition.

Whether the vehicle will be delivered with or without a flux capacitator remains to be seen, but the joy of fans of the vehicle is unmistakable.
