Vinfast Gaze Detection and Surround View Monitoring

Vietnamese automaker Vinfast gave me the opportunity not only to test drive its new electric vehicles, but also to show off driver monitoring, automatic mirror adjustment, and the one feature that uses a 360-degree environment display to make it easier for drivers to spot potholes or navigate tight parking spaces.

With driver and interior monitoring, the system watches the driver’s gaze and where he or she is facing. If he or she is not facing forward while driving, the system uses a voice alert to warn him or her. An alert is also given if the system detects a smartphone or someone eating or smoking. The latter is interesting for fleet operators who want to stop such activities and inattention.

Gaze detection can also be used to automatically adjust the rearview mirrors to the driver’s exact position

In the following video, we see in a developer version of Vin.AI how the system detects the gaze, outputs the messages and also adjusts the rearview mirror.

Driver monitoring has been mandatory on all new vehicles in the EU since 2022 to prevent accidents caused by inattention or fatigue.

In another demonstration, Vinfast showed Advanced Surround View Monitoring (ASVM) how the exterior cameras provide an image that is then seamlessly linked to show a 360-degree exterior view around the car, as well as one “under” the vehicle.
