NIO Reveals New Electric Sedan With 1,000 km Range
At the NIO Days in Suzhou, the Chinese electric car manufacturer unveiled the ET5, a mid-size sedan designed to compete with the Tesla Model 3. The vehicle is designed for NIO Autonomous Driving (NAD) and is already prepared with the corresponding sensors and computing power. However, the whole thing is underlined with the PanoCinema entertainment system in the vehicle itself. The wording of the press release on this:
PanoCinema is the panoramic and immersive digital cockpit on the ET5, featuring AR and VR technologies. NIO has partnered with NREAL, an innovative AR device company, to jointly develop AR glasses exclusive to NIO, which can project an effective screensize of 201-inch at 6 meters. NIO also collaborates with Nolo to jointly develop the NIO VR Glasses, with ultra-thin Pancake lenses, realizing binocular 4K display effect. The 10.2-inch HDR instrument cluster further boosts the vividness of images. Enabled by the cutting-edge hardware, continuous software development and content creation, elevated by the all-new 256-color curtain ambient lighting and Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 surround sound system, PanoCinema creates an exclusive space where users can indulge all their senses.
A subscription model also includes the battery replacement model used by NIO, which is said to cost 680 yuan (95 euros) per month.
The ET5 comes with a battery capacity of 75 kWh and 100 kWh, which should enable a range of 500 and 700 kilometers respectively on one charge. There are even plans for an ultra-long range battery with 150 kWh, which should then enable a range of over 1,000 kilometers. The vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds.
The purchase price is expected to be 328,000 yuan (just under 46,000 euros) in China without including the subsidy, and 258,000 yuan (36,000 euros) if the battery replacement system is taken as a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) package. The vehicles are scheduled for delivery from September 2022.
After opening its first branch outside of China in Norway in 2021, NIO also plans to open branches in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark in 2022. By 2025, NIO aims to have branches in 25 countries and regions worldwide.
