Mobileye Receives TÜV Approval for Autonomous Driving Tests in Germany
Mobileye has received an approval recommendation from TÜV SÜD, allowing it to operate autonomous test vehicles on public roads in Germany. The Mobileye Drive-equipped NIO ES8 vehicles will be allowed to drive on all roads in Germany with a safety driver on board.
The first test areas in this regard are Munich and Darmstadt, with 15 of the vehicles being deployed in Darmstadt itself. These will be incorporated into the operations of Hesse’s Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) public transport authority and are intended to offer on-demand services (mobility-as-a-service).
While in the current phase a safety driver will be present in the vehicles to intervene at any time, driverless operation is even targeted from 2024.
The NIO ES8 is retrofitted with a broad range of sensors and Mobileye’s own autonomous self-driving system Mobileye Drive for a defined operational design domain (“ODD”). A set of 13 cameras, plus an independent secondary perception system consisting of six surround radars and three long-range and six short-range surround lidars gives the self-driving vehicle redundant sensing capabilities (we call this approach True Redundancy). The EyeQ System-on-Chip (SoC) provides the necessary computing power to not only process the real-world data but also to make use of Mobileye’s Road Experience Management (REM) – AV maps – and lean driving policy with the mathematical model for automated driving we call Responsibility-Sensitive Safety (RSS).
