PepsiCo’s Experiences With Tesla Semi

Along with Frito Lays, beverage manufacturer PepsiCo is one of the first customers to receive Tesla Semis. PepsiCo currently has 21 of the electric Class 8 trucks in use at its Sacramento warehouse and has reported on its initial experience in a video.

The site has a photovoltaic system with 750 kW charging stations that provide power to battery-powered, tractors, delivery trucks and forklifts in addition to the Semis. The vehicles travel less than 160 kilometers per day on a 12-hour cycle, where 8 to 12 stops are often made, even in cities.

Three of the semis travel longer distances, between 400 and 720 kilometers with a full load. Within 20 to 30 minutes, the charge level is back to 95 percent. The infrastructure has 3 MW of power reserved for the semis.

PepsiCo also reports high efficiency gains from recuperation, especially over one stretch of road, Donner Pass, which includes long stretches downhill. PepsiCo is also working on its own charging infrastructure everywhere its semis go.

Drivers also seem very pleased, finding the semi very comfortable, and have experienced it as very quiet with small cornering radius and easy to use.
