Tesla Semi And Other Truck Data

Some interesting details about the Semi Truck came to light in a video released yesterday by Jay Leno and his show Jay Leno’s Garage, as well as other information about the truck business in the U.S. that helps us assess the possible applications of Tesla’s electric trucks.

First of all, it was revealed that Tesla has produced 70 semi trucks so far. They have been delivered since December 2022, but they are still only manufactured in a small factory outside the Giga-Factory Reno in Nevada, where five units can be produced per week. The new manufacturing facility st not yet come on line.

PepsiCo, a company that also operates several semi trucks, runs the majority of its 21 semi trucks 12 hours a day on routes under 100 miles (160 kilometers). Only three operate routes between 400 and 720 kilometers (250 to 450 miles). Thanks to Tesla MegaChargers on those routes, a Semi can charge from 5 to 95 percent in 20 to 30 minutes, according to PepsiCo.

In other news, we learned that in 2021, 87 percent of all truck deliveries in the U.S. – totaling 11.61 billion tons of freight – went no further than 400 kilometers (250 miles). Of that, 44 percent went no farther than 160 kilometers (100 miles), and 43 percent went between 160 and 400 kilometers (100 and 250 miles). Just 4 percent were transported farther than 800 kilometers (500 miles). Also, 70 percent of the transports are under the maximum weight of 80,000 pounds (36 tons), so the additional battery weight does not come into play.
