TuSimple Truck Crashes Into Center Guardrail

A video from a whistleblower shows how an autonomously driving truck from TuSimple drives calmly in the third lane, then suddenly turns left, crosses the fourth lane and the emergency lane, and touches the concrete guardrail. You can see the safety driver taking his right hand off the steering wheel beforehand and operating something on the dashboard when the steering wheel suddenly strikes. The safety driver tries to countersteer as quickly as possible and correct the ride.

According to an anonymous TuSimple whistleblower employee, the safety driver switched from manual driving mode to autonomous driving mode. When that was done, the truck immediately steered to the left. The incident took place on April 6, 2022, and the U.S. Department of Transportation began an investigation.

This incident happened on I-10 around El Rio Acres in Tucson in the U.S. state of Arizona.

In the U.S., about a dozen manufacturers are testing autonomous trucks on public roads, mostly in southern states. Other incidents have occurred in the process, most recently one involving a Waymo Via truck that was sideswiped by another truck.
