Waymo’s Safety Statistics After 1 Million Driverless Miles

After one million driverless miles experienced by Waymo robotaxis in San Francisco and Phoenix, the Alphabet subsidiary has released a small safety statistics with more details. In it, the company goes into detail about the collisions and incidents Waymo vehicles have been involved in.

Summary

After one million miles (1.6 million kilometers), there were no reported injuries and only two collisions that met the criteria for inclusion in NHTSA’s motor vehicle crash database. There were also 18 minor contact events that did not meet CISS criteria, with more than half of all contact events being the result of a human driver colliding with a stationary Waymo vehicle.

None of the collisions or contact events occurred at intersections or involved vulnerable road users such as pedestrians or bicyclists. Intersections are typically where crashes occur most frequently.

Each vehicle-to-vehicle event involved one or more traffic violations and/or dangerous behaviors on the part of the human drivers in the other vehicle.

Waymo published a more detailed study on security risks at the same time.
